Content language and translation

Lock the language Propstreet's AI writes in for the whole firm, and translate any one strategy or note into your own language when you need to read it.

What "content language" is, and why it exists

Two different language settings live in your Propstreet account — and they're easy to mix up.

  • Your app language is the language you see Propstreet's menus and labels in — buttons like Save, Edit, tab names like Prospects. It's a personal setting that lives on your user account. Each person on your team can have a different one.
  • Your firm's content language is the language Propstreet's AI writes in when it generates text for you — the investment strategy on a contact, an enrichment note on a company, an action description in the activity log. It's a firm-wide setting that the company admin chooses once, and every AI-generated piece of text comes out in that language no matter who in the firm triggered it.

Take a Hamburg house with mostly German staff and a couple of Scandinavian colleagues. Each one prefers their own app language. But when any of them clicks Generate strategy on a Stockholm investor, you want the strategy to come out in German every time, so the whole team reads the same text next week. Without a firm pin, you end up with a German strategy on Monday, a Swedish one on Tuesday, and a contact whose strategy drifts between the two.

Setting a content language pins all AI writing to one language for the firm, regardless of who hits the button.

This only affects AI-generated text. Your own typed notes, contact names, company names, free-form input you and your colleagues write yourselves — those stay in whatever language you typed them. The setting only controls what the AI produces.

Where to set it, and who can change it

The setting lives on the General card under Company settings. To get there:

  1. Open the user menu in the top-right of Propstreet.
  2. Pick Company settings.
  3. The General card opens by default.
  4. Scroll to AI content language. Pick a language from the dropdown, or leave it on the empty option to fall back to per-user behaviour.
  5. Save.

The languages currently available are English, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, French and German. If the dropdown is empty, future AI generations follow each team member's own app language — the old behaviour, useful for single-language teams.

Only company admins can change the AI content language. Other team members see the value but can't edit it.

Changing the setting does not retroactively translate strategies or notes that were already generated. Existing text keeps the language it was created in. Only AI generations from this point on follow the new setting. The Translate button (step 4) is how you read the older entries in your own language.

What the setting changes, and what it doesn't

The pin reaches further than the strategy on one contact. Two tables below: where it takes effect, and where it doesn't.

Where the pin takes effect

Where the pin does not take effect

The pin protects the persistent content your whole team reads. Your typed text and your menus stay personal.

Leaving the firm content-language pin blank doesn't mean "English". It means "use whatever app language the colleague who triggers the generation has set". For a single-language team this is fine and matches the pre-2026 behaviour, but it's not the safe default for mixed-language teams — pick a real language so colleagues stop generating in three different ones.

The Translate button

Even with a firm content language set, you'll still hit text in a different language sometimes. The classic case is a Finnish broker who's just joined a German firm: the strategy and notes on every existing contact are in German, and that's the right thing for the team — but the Finnish broker would still like to read this particular strategy in Finnish today.

The Translate button is for exactly that. It appears next to AI-generated text whenever the text's stamped language is different from your personal app language. Click it and the text renders in your language; click Show original and you're back. Translation is per-piece and nothing is persisted — a colleague opening the same contact a minute later still sees the original.

Where the button appears today:

  • Investment strategy on a contact or company. A small Translate link next to the Edit button on the strategy card in the right-hand sidebar.
  • Notes in the activity log. Under each AI-written note in the activity stream — both on the network sidebar and on the case inbox.
  • Action items in the activity log. Under each AI-written action — for example, the explanation behind an automatic classification.
  • Classifications. Under the classification message itself, so you can read why the AI moved a prospect to Interested in your language.

It only shows when the entry's stamped language differs from your app language; if the languages match, there's nothing to translate and no button. Older entries with no language stamp at all get the button anyway — Propstreet detects the source language for you.

Translation is a live AI call — the first click takes a moment while it runs, and the button shows a small spinner. Once translated, Show original / Translate swaps instantly between the two — Propstreet remembers the translation as long as the entry is on screen, so the second toggle is free.

The button only appears on AI-generated content with a language stamp. A note you wrote by hand doesn't have a stamp (Propstreet doesn't know what language you were typing in), so there's no Translate button next to it. If you need to read a hand-typed note in another language, paste it into the Agent and ask for a translation — that's a chat reply, not a piece of persistent content.

Cross-language search and the Agent

A question we get from mixed-language firms: pin the firm to German and you're sitting on a years-deep pile of Swedish and Finnish notes. Does search still find them? Does the Agent still read them?

No. The pin only governs the language new content is written in. The Agent's search across your prospects, notes, files and reports runs on the underlying content — it doesn't care which language you're reading it in.

  • The Agent finds the right prospects when you ask in your own language, even if every strategy on those prospects is in another language. Asking "find me investors interested in Stockholm office" works whether the firm's strategies live in German, Finnish or English.
  • An English-speaking broker asking "summarise the strategies on this contact" gets a fluent English answer even though the strategies are in German.
  • The case-detail search box (see Search inside a case) keeps finding the right notes and files regardless of which language they were written in. Match scores aren't penalised for language mismatch.

One thing to remember: when the Agent quotes stored text back at you verbatim — a sentence from a note, a clause from a file — the quote is in the language it was saved in. Ask for a translation ("translate the quoted sentence to French") and it'll do it inline, but it never translates a quote on its own.

Limits worth knowing

Five things to know about how the pin behaves at the edges:

  • Supported content languages. English, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian (Bokmål), Finnish, French, German — the same seven Propstreet supports as app languages. Dutch isn't on the list today; Belgian and Dutch firms typically pick French for the Wallonia side and English everywhere else. If your firm operates in a market that isn't covered, leave the pin blank and we'll fall back to per-user behaviour while we add the locale.
  • The Translate button calls the AI live each time. First click on a given entry takes a second or two; subsequent toggles between Show original and Translate are instant for that same entry, because the result is held while it's on your screen. Translation counts against your firm's AI usage the same way other Agent calls do, and a short note is cheap compared to a full Agent turn.
  • Translations aren't persisted. Clicking Translate doesn't change what your colleague sees — the next person to open the contact still sees the original. The firm's text-of-record is the original; translations are reader conveniences. If a colleague needs the contact in their own language every day, change their app language or the firm's content language rather than translating each entry by hand.
  • AI quote translation is on demand. The Agent will translate a stored note inline if you ask it to in chat ("translate this lease summary to English"), but it doesn't translate on its own when quoting — it preserves the original.
  • Existing content keeps its language. Setting or changing the firm's content language doesn't sweep through and translate the strategies and notes you already have. Pre-existing entries either keep their stamp (if generated under a previous pin) or show the Translate button always (if they were generated before stamping existed at all).
Summary
  • AI content language is a firm-wide pin that controls the language every AI-generated strategy, note and report is written in — separate from each colleague's personal app language

  • The Agent still finds your prospects, notes and files no matter which language they're stored in — search and matching are language-agnostic. Only the words you see on screen follow the pin

Most teams set this once on day one and never think about it again. The cost of leaving it blank in a mixed-language firm is a contact whose strategy is in German on Monday and Swedish on Tuesday because two colleagues clicked Generate. Pin the language once and that stops happening.
